POEM: 11 APRIL 2010

My taniwha is Megabyte,
His manners are quite rare.
He has enormous hairy hands,
Five bloodshot eyes, ten yellow fangs,
But likes to dine with candles and
A table and a chair.
When he gobbles up his victims,
I’m happy to report,
He holds a napkin in his tail,
To wipe his tusks and claws and scales;
He clears his plate and never fails
To use a knife and fork!

This is the kind of poem I’d have driven my mother insane with by reciting over and over as a child. I still love such rhythms and rhymes, they’re such fun! I bet kids love you.

Thanks, Eryl. I always get three tall audience members to form a ‘table’ on hands and knees. Then I choose a willing junior student to act as the ‘monster food’. While I recite the second stanza, I pick him up, lie him on the table, pretend to eat his toes, gobble his fingers, lick his tummy…and monstrously ham up every line. It’s a real crowd-pleaser, alright! My own children’s poetry heroes include Jack Prelutsky (US) and Michael Rosen (UK), among many, many others. =)

Thanks, Andy. The ABCCCB rhyme scheme holds up really well in performance. =)

Attitude and etiquette – quite unlike the monsters of old.
I’d love to see it performed… meanwhile I’ll wait for your 12 post to reappear…

Laughing here! I love it. This kind of thing appeals to my not so inner child

Thanks, Marisa. I think Megabyte has earned a permanent spot in my poetry show. And long may you celebrate your Inner Kid! =)
